Leo A ist a dwarf galaxy in our Local Group of galaxies. Its mass is only about 80 million times the mass of our sun, but about 80% (!) of it is dark matter.

Emission Nebulae

Sh2-263, vdB 38 (Raspberry Nebula)

Sh2-263 is an emission nebula in the northern part of constellation Orion. It is powered by the bright star HD 34989 in the center of the nebula.

Dark Nebulae

This is part of the large dusty molecular cloud in constellation Taurus. vdB 27 (or LBN 785) is the small reflection nebula on the bottom left, illuminated by the variable star RY Tauri. LBN 782 is the bright nebula on the top left.

This is a star cluster with reflection nebula in constellation Perseus about 1000-1250 light years from earth.

NGC 404 (Mirach‘s Ghost)

The star (Mirach or β Andromedae) is a red giant about 200 light years away, pretty close by in the foreground, and hence its bright and orange appearence. It is a variable star, which becomes at some times the brightest star in constellation Andromeda. Of particular interest in this image is the bright cloud next to it on the top left side.
