Leo A (Leo III)

Leo A ist a dwarf galaxy in our Local Group of galaxies. Its mass is only about 80 million times the mass of our sun, but about 80% (!) of it is dark matter.

The galaxy is pretty isolated and has not encountered any gravitational interaction with other members of the Local Group at least over the past billion years. The star population is pretty old and most of the stars formed more than 8 billion years ago.
The galaxy is classified as irregular and does not rotate at all.
So it is a bit unusual.
Rarely imaged … but I gave it a try. After having imaged two dwarf galaxies in Leo … there is one left …
