Sh2-101 (Tulip Nebula) and Cygnus X-1

A star forming region in Cygnus about 6000 light years from earth.

Not only young stars just being born populate this region but also an already dead star has been identified. Cygnus X-1 can be found not too far from the main nebula in this image. First discovered as the strongest X-ray source in constellation Cygnus (hence its name), it has become the first stellar black hole discovered in our Milky Way galaxy.

Sh2-90, Sh2-89

Several HII regions in constellation Vulpecula about 7000-8000 light years distant.

Sh2-101 (Tulip Nebula), NGC 6883, NGC 6871

A wide field in constellation Cygnus with Sh2-101, the Tulip Nebula, as the dominant nebula on the right side. It is a HI region about 6000 light years from earth. Just next to it we can see the companion star of Cygnus-X1, the first confirmed stellar black hole.

Sh2-54, NGC 6604

Another star forming region in constellation Serpens.

M 17 (Omega Nebula), M 18

An emission nebula in constellation Sagittarius about 5000 to 6000 light years from earth.
